Kintsugi is a Japanese art form that involves repairing broken pottery with a special lacquer mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum. Instead of hiding the cracks, this technique highlights and celebrates them, transforming the broken object into a work of art with a unique and beautiful history. For years, I have collected pottery pieces that have caught my eye, but after falling in love with a Plate ter and having twin toddlers, our family has moved around a lot and many of my beloved pieces have suffered the hard reality of life. Fortunately, my desire to fix these broken pieces led me to the ancient Japanese art of kintsugi. Beyond being a practical means of restoration, I found the philosophy behind this technique to be deeply meaningful. As someone who has longed for a more practical creative practice, kintsugi fulfilled both my lifestyle needs and my philosophical aspirations.
