My first book of photographs, published by blurb is now ready for purchase in softback, hardback as an image wrap and hardback with a dust jacket, its not a huge book and will fit nice on a coffee table or in the loo, or probably more fitting on a yacht, and not the book I've been alluding to (more on that latter, when the details are finalized) but its NICE, and the process thanks to blurb was a nice and simple one, so <a href="http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/587531">go and get your self a copy if you like</a>, all proceeds will go towards funding an exhibition of paintings and photographs.

After messing about with Wordpress before to no great effect or commitment on my behalf I decided to, in the words of a weirder man then me to 'Grip it and rip it' (stifled chuckle) and have now hopefully mastered the art. What pushed me to do this is the fact that I get asked so often if I can adapt and create Wordpress templates and I've always answered with an embarrassed murmur "Not really tried". With the explosion of blogging several years back It struck me as absurd that I hadn't taken the time out to get my head around it, so in no more then 2 evenings (a fist full of hours) I have now created / adapted an existing template to suit my needs, and <a href="http://www.mccoy.co.uk/blog/">here it is</a>. The subject matters I will blog about will be as erratic as my likes and interests as will the frequency of update will reflect my workload. The spelling and grammar will still remain 'Quirky' at best, also I suppose reflective of my nature & personality.

Some time in the fog of the last couple of days that hides between Christmas and New Years I received an interesting email from Ecogeak informing me of an interesting idea in font design, the idea was to create a font that cut down the ink needed in order to print with it, it does this buy having holes in the body of the font, humm I wasn't sure about it when I read it but it looks a damn site better then I thought it would and am looking forward to the opportunity to use it in action.

Today I took delivery of 2 packages from the UK containing 2 sets of metal type the first is Bodini Italic 24pt and the second is Gill Sans 6pt and my intention is to make some beautiful objects using them for sale through an online store I am developing for this site, via the lovely Etsy and through the Saturday Market on Waiheke Island. On the subject of type I received word today that one of my first fonts is to be distributed in Japan as part of a book on Dingbats, the book is <a href="http://www.bnn.co.jp/books/title_index/material/type_dingbat.html">Type Dingbat published by BNN</a> and it looks a great looking book

It was for a UK company that makes a delicious sounding bread, not that I got to try any with me being the other side of the world on Waiheke Island in New Zealand for the entirety of the project, but I am going to have to try and make myself to satisfy my curiosity.<br>

I've finally put together 3 of the 4 concept illustrations that I hope to produce as limited edition hand printed and painted on fair trade, organic cotton T-shirts, I'm just at the moment sourcing the materials and testing the water to see if any one might actually be interested in them, so if your tired of these mass produced, bold, garish and even aggressive t-shirts and are interested in something a little more handmade, soft, individual and playful then take a <a href="http://www.mccoy.co.uk/portfolio/illustratorFrenchCinema.php">peak at the T-shirt concepts</a> and <a href="http://www.mccoy.co.uk/contact/index.php">drop me a line</a> to let me know as it will give me the encouragement to invest the time and money into getting them into production, Encouragement is by no means a commitment to buy!

Well without any fanfare or fuss I am happy to say that the new McCoy site is live and kicking and your looking at it, it boasts a new more rationalised navigation, a calmer more considered placement of doodles and elements and an expanded and categorised <a href="http://www.mccoy.co.uk/portfolio">portfolio</a> there is also the odd easter egg page. The redesign is set to coincide with the launch of a new project I worked on for Liberty Human Rights that is set to be launched exclusively in this weekends Observer newspaper so I cant say any more until next week as I wouldn't want to spoil the exclusivity but needless to say its a great idea and a bloody good cause and I am proud to have been involved.

Living in what is ostensibly the creative community of Waiheke Island in New Zealand has inspired me to brush up on my more traditional creative skills and shake awake my already stirring illustration skills. Most of <a href="http://www.mccoy.co.uk/portfolio/illustrator.php">these illustrations</a> where created on the ferry commute to and from, and for the place I am working at, but alas they didn't want them so here they are for your edification and viewing pleasure. I would be very interested in doing more illustration if anyone has a need for them!?!

Initially I booked out variations of my name to stop <a href="http://scottdylanxclusivemedia.wordpress.com/">xclusivemedia</a> using them for blackmail as they have done with other folks who have spoken out against there crimes but I actually like the interface a lot and have started exploring it for doing a music reviews project that I have wanted to do for nearly 20 years, nut more on that later.

"The new CEO of Virgin Media, Neil Berkett, has openly stated in an interview that they think net neutrality is "a load of bollocks" and claimed theyre already doing deals to deliver some people?s content faster than others. They would then put websites and services that dont pay Virgin in the "slow lane", meaning those sites would load slowly and cause most users to give up using them, feeling forced to use whatever Virgin wants to push through their network."

It is with regret that I have had to close the comments function to the articles on this site, I have been forced to do this because of the overwhelming quantities of spam I have been getting and fear others may have been subject to as a result of the comments functionality becoming hijacked by dreary unimaginative sub beings who wish to peddle there porn and pills. I fail to see the point or purpose in this approach to marketing your wares, but I suppose I'm fortunate enough to not really be in the market for such nonsense. I often annoys me how puerile the internet is.

I upgraded the copy of the Firefox browser on my Mac to the version 3 beta because the last version was so unstable but it appears that many of my add ons are not yet compatible, for the most part this isn't an issue but Fire-bug I cant do without and was having to run my PC alongside my Mac just to use Firebug (Not very conscientious I admit). However I just came across a version of Firebug that will allow me to use the indispensable tool.

Important lesson number one

I have had cause to pause and reflect long and hard on something recently and it revolves around being offered the opportunity to create something different that flies in the face of conventional wisdom with the intention of doing something unique. Doing this will always polarise opinion and the negative camp will always be the loudest, most passionate and most personal in their vocalisations, they will make sweeping generalisations and often get things out of context and wrong in their rush to be heard. It will hurt to receive such criticism and you will get little visible support when things go bad, the comments will be cutting and harsh... But the lesson that must be learnt in all this is do not lose your cool and start fumbling to justify your self and cover your arse. Instead stand proud, don't expect people not in the firing line to join you, and let it wash over you, it will pass, but loosing your dignity and integrity will last. Never let it put you off getting involved in brave, difficult and potentially unpopular decisions, if you do then nothing interesting will ever happen, there will be no innovation and there will be no progress. Sure it won't always work out and you will look like a fool, but every now and again it will, and I would happily trade one hundred mediocrities for one success and a bag of failures.

An interesting article over at Eco Geak about the reduction in environmental impact as a result of business moving over to the internet, with some interesting and some daft responses, for example the adoration of Al Gore as the Godhead of the environmental movement makes me nervous as I never wholly trust the motives of any politician and I am old enough to remember his families involvement in the PRMC and the harm that has done to freedom (google it). Plus I truly believe that the answer to these issues isn't in some celeb or leader but in fact in a ground swell of communities choosing to make a difference, and that is why the internet is so powerful in that it can serve to unite geographically diverse but ideological neighbours. But the focus must always be on the issues that effect us and not at creating eco-celebs and allowing them to usurp the issue for their own political and personal gain, but if it helps to solve the issue and unite and inform an otherwise distracted majority then I'll bite my lip and put up with it.

After many emails from young whipper snappers asking if they can come and work at McCoy Digital and having to explain that that's not really my business model at the moment but that I may know some folks who are hiring. I have now teamed up with Krop and am able to offer their jobs listings service for employers and job seeker right from this very site, how cool is that!!!

I've been listening to a lot of really interesting, informative and useful web design and related podcasts over the last couple of months, and I think for me at least its the best way of taking in information and making the freelancers day a little less lonely, anyway I value them so much I have put a list together to share them with the world, even better then that is I have made the list from XML so you can have it as a RSS feed, but even better then that I am also asking for folks to send over any I have missed so we can all share, but wait as a little bit extra I've also done the same for web design books and web sites, so don't be selfish if you have a great resource pop it over and lets share.

I found a pack of zip disks under my bed that contain old archives of this site from way back when I started it in November 1998 (Yes this site, really has been going that long) back then it appears that I was a lot more experimental and less standards aware, still that's just growing up I suppose!
Ted Stanke just returned to New York from his show in Berlin and has been working hard to produce new work. In an effort to recuperate from his 2 weeks missed wages and the airline/shipping expenses he is offering many archived sculptures at reduced rates this month. If you or someone you know is interested in buying some art, check out his website.

Two new fonts in a week, I must either be very inspired, very bored or its getting easy! To be honest I have had both the new fonts planned for a while it was just finding some new software to make the build of them smoother, The new font is made of a stamping set and is a lot more cheeky then previous fonts, It is named after my second daughter and I think pretty accurately carries her personality (awkward but lovable)

After working most evenings of the new year I have today finished my first font in over 2 years, Its called Hello Lori after my eldest daughter who watched me illustrate most of it and I am going to name all subsequent fonts after my wife and kids and when I run out of names I'll just have to have more children to accommodate my font making fun. Hello Lori is an open and friendly found font in a lo-fi but not grungy feel that looks best large.

The Dutch Government has introduced a new law on accessibility that is to impact on all its web sites, whilst this is good for those who require a higher level of accessibility its is also good for us freelance web professionals as stated by the linked to article this should help reduce the number of new amateurs who are swamping the market with cheep and second rate skills devaluing the profession.

I recieved one of googles digital picture frames as a christmas gift and started to plan all the fun and funky creative ways I could use it only to find the next day it wouldnt even power up, I have done a bit of digging around on google and have discovered that I am not alone and that it is quite a common issue. The thing seams to have been very cheaply made and as a result is just going to be filed as toxic landfill. Not sure how this gifts inability to work reflects on Google.

As part of a new year clean out I have given the site a proper over hall and with the help of Google Analytics cut out a lot of the under performing areas of the site, I have also utilised a more visually intensive and back to form interface style, I still have a fair few illustrations to do for many sections and will be doing these in the new year. I have also utilised an image replacement script so that much of the images you see are not really there ???

Sometimes moving the furniture about is as refreshing as a new home. With mccoy.co.uk I tend to do a bit of a re-design annually as new content outgrows the the site architecture. However, events have forced my hand, but whilst its not a redesign, so to speak it is a tightening up of a few bolts that have worked themselves loose both in the build and the brand.
